What you'll achieve
Ads bring people in, but not every click is a sale. Without a way to qualify intent in the moment, sales teams end up chasing cold leads while high-intent shoppers slip away waiting for a reply — and that lost time is lost marketing spend.
This guide shows you how to turn TikTok Click-to-WhatsApp (CTWA) Ads into a real-time sales channel: every ad click opens a WhatsApp conversation that automatically asks the right qualifying questions, then routes the lead to the right team or store the moment they're ready to buy.
By the end of this guide, you'll be able to:
Capture every lead instantly from TikTok Click-to-WhatsApp Ads
Automatically qualify customer intent by collecting purchase requirements
Route high-intent leads to the right sales team or store for faster follow-up
Reduce manual effort while improving response times and customer experience
Increase lead-to-sale conversions and get more out of your ad spend
The short version
To turn your TikTok Click-to-WhatsApp Ads into a qualifying, routing sales channel:
Confirm your prerequisites: TikTok integration enabled in Wati, and your WhatsApp Business API number connected and not used elsewhere.
Create a TikTok campaign with Lead generation as the objective.
Configure your ad group with Conversations as the optimization goal and Instant messaging apps (WhatsApp) as the destination.
Create your ad, write a clear "Message us" CTA, and publish.
Set up a qualifying conversation flow in Wati that collects the details you need.
Configure routing rules so qualified leads are assigned to the right team, store, or agent.
Test the ad before launch, then confirm leads are arriving and routed correctly in Wati.

When to use this guide
Use this if:
You're running (or planning to run) TikTok ads and want clicks to land in a qualifying WhatsApp conversation instead of a generic chat
Your sales team wastes time on unqualified or low-intent leads
You have multiple stores, clinics, or consultants and need leads routed to the right one automatically
You want to shorten the time between "ad click" and "first meaningful response"
Do NOT use this if:
You're running Facebook Click-to-WhatsApp Ads or Google Click-to-Message Ads instead of TikTok — those have their own separate guides
You're looking to run WhatsApp campaigns to an existing contact list rather than generate new leads from ads
Your leads don't come from TikTok ads at all (this guide is specific to the TikTok Click-to-WhatsApp Ads flow)
Limitations
This feature is available only on Wati Pro and Business plans.
Wati currently supports Click-to-WhatsApp only among TikTok's instant messaging destinations — other messaging apps aren't supported through this integration.
Your campaign objective must be Lead generation — other objectives aren't supported for this flow.
The optimization goal must be Conversations, not Click — Click only optimizes for button clicks and doesn't optimize based on actual WhatsApp conversation events.
Conversations optimization requires the Wati-TikTok integration to be enabled and a Message Event Set configured — without it, TikTok can't match your WhatsApp number or optimize toward real conversations.
Your WhatsApp Business number can't be in use by another WhatsApp Personal or WhatsApp Business app at the same time.
Newly created TikTok ads can take up to 24 hours to sync with Wati, and events can take around 30 minutes to appear in TikTok Events Manager.
TikTok messaging ad reporting data isn't available in Wati yet — check performance in TikTok Ads Manager directly for now.
💡 TikTok's ad review timelines and WhatsApp messaging window policies aren't covered in this guide — check TikTok Ads Manager Help and Meta's WhatsApp Business documentation for the latest specifics, since they can change independently of this setup flow.

Key concepts
TikTok Click-to-WhatsApp (CTWA) Ad
A TikTok ad format where the call-to-action opens a WhatsApp conversation instead of a website or app, so a customer's very first interaction with your brand is a chat.
Optimization goal
The setting that tells TikTok what to optimize ad delivery toward. Conversations optimizes for people likely to actually start a WhatsApp conversation; Click optimizes only for button clicks, with no awareness of what happens after.
Message Event Set
The event configuration created through the Wati-TikTok integration that lets TikTok recognize when a click turned into a real WhatsApp conversation — this is what makes Conversations optimization possible.
Optimization location
The TikTok setting that tells the platform where a click should lead — for this use case, it must be set to Instant messaging apps, pointed at your connected WhatsApp Business number.
Lead qualification
Automatically collecting the details you need from a customer (like product, budget, or location) before a human agent gets involved, so agents only spend time on leads that are ready to buy.
Routing
Assigning a qualified conversation to the right team, store, or agent automatically, based on the information the customer provided.
How it works
Customer clicks "Message us" on your TikTok ad
↓
WhatsApp opens automatically with a pre-filled message
↓
Qualifying questions collect intent (product, budget, location, etc.)
↓
Lead is routed to the right team, store, or agent
↓
Sales team follows up while intent is still high
1. Ad click starts a WhatsApp conversation
When a customer taps the "Message us" button on your TikTok ad, WhatsApp opens automatically to a chat with your connected business number, with a pre-filled message already in the chat box. The WhatsApp conversation becomes the primary channel for lead qualification.
2. TikTok optimizes delivery toward real conversations, not just clicks
Because your ad group's optimization goal is set to Conversations, TikTok uses the Message Event Set from your Wati integration to learn which clicks actually turn into WhatsApp conversations, then shows your ad to more people likely to do the same. If the goal is left on Click, TikTok only optimizes for button taps and has no visibility into whether a conversation actually started.
3. Lead qualification happens automatically
Wati automatically asks qualifying questions, such as:
Product interest
Budget
Location
Any other qualifying questions you configure
No human agent is involved until the customer's responses indicate that the lead is ready for follow-up.
4. Qualified leads are routed automatically
Based on the customer's responses, Wati applies your routing rules to automatically assign the conversation to the appropriate:
Sales team
Store or branch
Individual agent
5. Sales teams receive qualified leads
By the time a conversation reaches your sales team, the lead has already been qualified and categorized. Agents receive leads that are ready for follow-up instead of spending time filtering through unqualified or raw ad traffic.
Step-by-step setup
Step 1. Create your campaign in TikTok Ads Manager
Goal: Set up a campaign with the objective this flow requires.
Steps:
Open TikTok Ads Manager.
Go to the Campaign tab and click Create.
Select Lead generation as the campaign objective.
(Optional) Enable Split Test if you want to compare different audiences or creatives.
Click Continue.
Result: Your campaign is created under the Lead generation objective, ready for ad group configuration.
Step 2. Configure your ad group
Goal: Point your ad group at WhatsApp and set it up to optimize for real conversations, not just clicks.
Steps:
Under optimization goal, select Conversations (not Click) — this requires the Wati integration and a configured Message Event Set. (Choosing Click instead optimizes for button taps only, and lets you point the destination at a custom URL instead of WhatsApp.)
Set the Optimization location to Instant messaging apps.
Enter or select your connected WhatsApp Business number. TikTok automatically matches this number with the Message Event Set created through your Wati integration.
Confirm the TikTok placement is selected, and set your daily Budget & Schedule.
Enable Dayparting (recommended) so your ad only shows during hours your team can actually respond.
Result: Your ad group is configured to send every click straight into a WhatsApp conversation with your business, only runs when your team is available to respond, and lets TikTok optimize delivery based on actual conversations started.
Step 3. Configure and publish your ad
Goal: Create the ad creative that drives customers into WhatsApp.
Steps:
Confirm the destination is your connected WhatsApp Business number.
Create your ad creative and write your ad copy.
Include a clear call-to-action, such as "Message us," encouraging customers to start a WhatsApp conversation.
Click Publish all to launch the campaign.
Result: Your TikTok CTWA ad is live (or in TikTok's review queue) with a clear path into a WhatsApp conversation.
Step 4. Set up your qualifying conversation in Wati
Goal: Make sure the WhatsApp conversation a customer lands in actually qualifies them, instead of just greeting them.
Steps:
In Wati, build a chatbot flow or automated message sequence that asks for what you need to qualify the lead — for example, product interest, budget, size, or location (see the examples below for ideas by industry).
Publish the flow so it's live and ready to respond to new conversations.
Result: Every new conversation from your TikTok ad is met with a qualifying flow instead of a blank chat.
How to identify TikTok CTWA conversations in your Team Inbox
Every conversation that starts from a TikTok Click-to-WhatsApp ad is tagged and tracked in Wati, so agents don't have to guess where a lead came from.
Each conversation that started from a TikTok CTWA ad is tagged T-CTWA in the Team Inbox, identifying it as a TikTok ad-driven conversation.
Ad-source contact attribute: Wati automatically sets
tiktok_ad_idon the contact profile for every TikTok CTWA lead, so you can trace a conversation back to the ad that generated it.Qualification tracking attribute: Wati sets
tiktok_ad_qualified_lead = trueon the contact when the qualified-lead template message (configured as part of your Wati-TikTok integration) is sent in response to that customer.Replying to tag the lead as qualified: To have a reply count as qualifying the lead, use the Template Messages button in the reply box and send the same template your integration has configured for "Track qualified leads" — sending a different message won't set the attribute.
💡 Learn more: For the full integration setup this tracking depends on, see How to connect TikTok Click-to-WhatsApp Ads with Wati.
Automate routing for TikTok CTWA leads with Rules
After a TikTok Click-to-WhatsApp conversation has been qualified, you can use Automation → Rules in Wati to automatically route it instead of assigning it manually.
Configure your rule as follows:
Trigger: Select New WhatsApp message is received.
Filter: Match conversations based on the customer's qualifying responses (product interest, budget, location), or on contact attributes — including
tiktok_ad_id, which Wati automatically stores for every TikTok CTWA lead, letting you build rules specific to conversations from TikTok ads.Action: Automatically assign the conversation to the right agent or team, or trigger a chatbot to continue qualifying before handing it over to a human agent.
Activate: Turn the rule On and save it. It will run automatically for every conversation that matches your conditions.
💡 Learn more: For a detailed walkthrough on configuring keyword matching and reply materials, see How to create keyword-based rules.
Here are some examples by industry
Retail or eCommerce: Bring shoppers from an ad into WhatsApp, understand the products they're looking for, their preferred size, and budget, then guide them to purchase online or visit the nearest store.
Healthcare: Bring prospective patients into WhatsApp, identify whether they're looking for a health package, diagnostic test, specialist, or insurance plan, then connect them to the right clinic or care team to book an appointment.
Travel & Hospitality: Bring travellers into WhatsApp, gather details about their destination, travel dates, group size, and budget, then help them choose and book the right trip or stay.
EdTech: Bring prospective students into WhatsApp, understand which course or programme they're interested in, then guide them to book a free demo class or enrol.
Professional Services: Bring prospective clients into WhatsApp, understand the service they need, such as tax filing, investment advice, or legal consultation, then connect them with the right consultant to schedule a consultation or complete the next steps, such as KYC or document verification.
Confirm it's working
Before launching your campaign, test the ad to verify it opens the correct WhatsApp conversation.
In TikTok Ads Manager, hover over "Check if the ID opens properly" to reveal a QR code, and scan it with your phone (make sure WhatsApp is installed).
Alternatively, preview your ad in TikTok and click the CTWA button directly.
You should see:
WhatsApp open automatically 🎉
The chat open with your connected business number
A pre-filled message already in the chat box, formatted like: "TikTok ID: [ID]. Hello! I came across your ad on TikTok and would like to find out more."
Send the pre-filled message without editing it, then check your Wati Team Inbox to confirm the conversation arrived tagged T-CTWA — this confirms both the ad setup and the tracking are working correctly.
After launch, check TikTok Ads Manager's "Cost per result (conversations)" metric (add it via Custom Columns → Messaging Event → "Conversations (instant messaging app)") for reach and cost per started chat, and check Wati to see which campaigns are generating the most qualified conversations — use this to refine targeting over time. Allow up to ~30 minutes for new events to appear in TikTok Events Manager.
Pro tips for success
Ask only what you need to route the lead: Every extra qualifying question is a chance for a customer to drop off. Keep your qualifying flow as short as the routing decision requires.
Always optimize for Conversations, not Click: Click-based optimization can inflate button taps without actually growing real, qualified WhatsApp conversations — Conversations is what aligns TikTok's delivery with the outcome you actually want.
Always offer a human escape hatch: Let customers reach a person at any point in the qualifying flow, so a rigid question sequence never becomes the reason you lose a sale.
Review your qualified-lead volume weekly: Compare TikTok's reported clicks against Wati's qualified-conversation count to see which creatives and audiences actually convert, not just which get the most taps.
Troubleshooting
Why isn't my ad optimizing based on real conversations?
Possible causes:
The optimization goal is set to Click instead of Conversations
The Wati-TikTok integration isn't enabled, or the Message Event Set isn't configured
Resolution:
In your ad group settings, confirm the optimization goal is set to Conversations.
Confirm the TikTok integration is enabled in Wati and that a Message Event Set exists and is linked to your WhatsApp number.
Why doesn't clicking my ad open the right WhatsApp conversation?
Possible causes:
The WhatsApp Business number is being used by another WhatsApp Personal or Business app
The wrong WhatsApp number was selected as the messaging destination
The TikTok integration isn't properly connected in Wati
Resolution:
Confirm your WhatsApp Business number isn't active in any other WhatsApp Personal or Business app.
Recheck the messaging destination in your ad group and confirm the correct number is selected.
Reconfirm the TikTok integration status in your Wati account settings.
Why isn't the WhatsApp conversation qualifying leads?
Possible causes:
No qualifying flow was built or published in Wati
The chatbot or automated message sequence isn't set to trigger on new conversations
Resolution:
Check that your qualifying flow exists in Wati and is published/live.
Confirm it's set to trigger automatically on new incoming conversations.
Why isn't a lead being marked as qualified (tiktok_ad_qualified_lead)?
Possible causes:
The agent replied with a regular message instead of using the Template Messages button
The template sent doesn't match the one configured under "Track qualified leads" in your Wati-TikTok integration
Resolution:
When responding to a lead you consider qualified, use the Template Messages button in the reply box.
Send the exact template configured for "Track qualified leads" — sending a different message won't set the attribute.
Why aren't qualified leads being routed automatically?
Possible causes:
No Rule was created for routing, or the Rule wasn't turned on
The Rule's filter conditions don't match the qualifying answers customers are actually giving
Resolution:
Go to Automation → Rules and confirm your routing rule exists and is turned On.
Review the Rule's filter conditions against real qualifying answers, and adjust if they're too narrow.
🚀 What's next
Now that your CTWA ads are qualifying and routing leads automatically, your next step is to set up conversion tracking so you can see exactly which ads are turning into sales.
