How to fix abandoned checkout messages when using third-party checkout providers on Shopify

Updated this week

Summary

If you use a third-party checkout provider like Gokwik, Shopflo, or Zecpe with your Shopify store, Wati may not automatically send abandoned checkout messages. This happens because these providers bypass Shopify’s default checkout flow.

This guide explains why it happens and shows you how to enable a simple setting in Wati so it can read the checkout link from your Shopify order and send recovery messages correctly.

Instructions

Why this happens

By default, Wati detects checkout links directly from Shopify’s native checkout process.

When you use a third-party checkout provider:

  • The standard Shopify checkout is skipped

  • The checkout link is not automatically visible to Wati

  • Abandoned checkout messages cannot be triggered

To solve this, Wati can read the checkout link from the Notes section of the Shopify order instead.

However, this only works if your checkout provider saves the link there.

Who can use this feature

This option is available only on Wati's:

  • Pro plan

  • Business plan

If you’re on older plans such as Standard or Professional, you’ll need to upgrade to access this feature.

How to enable checkout link for Shopify orders in Wati

Follow these steps to enable abandoned checkout recovery messages via Wati when using third-party checkouts with Shopify store:

Step 1: Enable the checkout link setting in Wati

  • Log in to your Wati dashboard

  • Go to Integrations and click on Shopify

  • Go to Automation → Automated messages.

  • Check Abandoned Checkout Recovery Message is enabled

  • Find Checkout Link Under Abandoned checkout recovery settings

  • Toggle it On

This allows Wati to read the checkout URL from the Shopify order Notes section.

Step 2: Ask your checkout provider to save the link

Contact your third-party provider (for example, Gokwik, Shopflo, or Zecpe) and ask them to:

  • Store the checkout URL

  • Save it in the Notes section of each Shopify order

This step is required. Without the link in Notes, Wati cannot send the message.

Step 3: Test your setup

After enabling the setting:

  • Create a test checkout

  • Abandon the checkout

  • Confirm that the checkout link appears in the Shopify order Notes

  • Verify that the abandoned checkout message is sent

How it works

Once enabled:

  • Wati reads the checkout link from Notes

  • The link is automatically inserted into your abandoned checkout message

  • The recovery message is sent to the customer

Things to keep in mind

  • Messages work only if the checkout URL is present in Notes

  • If the Notes field is empty, the message will not be sent

  • This feature is not available on older plans

  • Always test after making changes

If messages are still not being delivered, double-check that the provider is correctly saving the checkout link in every order.

You’re all set. Once configured, Wati will automatically handle abandoned checkout recovery even when using third-party checkout providers.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

General questions

1. Why are my abandoned checkout messages not being sent?

If you use a third-party checkout provider, Shopify’s default checkout flow is skipped. Because of this, Wati cannot automatically detect the checkout link, so abandoned checkout messages are not triggered.

2. Which checkout providers can cause this issue?

Any third-party provider that replaces Shopify’s native checkout, such as Gokwik, Shopflo, or Zecpe, may prevent Wati from detecting the checkout link automatically.

3. How does Wati normally detect checkout links?

With Shopify’s native checkout, Wati reads the checkout link directly from Shopify. This allows it to trigger abandoned checkout recovery messages automatically.

Setup and eligibility

4. Who can use the checkout link Shopify feature in Wati?

This feature is available only on the Pro and Business plans of Wati. If you’re on older plans like Standard or Professional, you’ll need to upgrade.

5. How do I enable checkout link support in Wati?

Go to your Wati dashboard → Integrations → Shopify → Automation → Automated messages. Make sure Abandoned Checkout Recovery Message is enabled, then turn on the Checkout Link option.

6. What else is required besides enabling the setting?

Your Shopify checkout provider must save the checkout URL in the Notes section of each Shopify order. Without this, Wati cannot read the link or send recovery messages.

How it works and troubleshooting

7. How does the recovery message work after setup?

Wati reads the checkout link from the order’s Notes, automatically inserts it into your abandoned checkout message, and sends it to the customer.

8. What happens if the Notes field is empty?

If the checkout URL is not saved in the Notes section, the abandoned checkout message will not be sent.

9. How can I test if everything is working correctly?

Create a test checkout, abandon it, check that the link appears in the Shopify order Notes, and confirm that Wati sends the recovery message.
